BarnabasĀ (/ĖbÉĖrnÉbÉs/;Ā Greek: ĪĪ±ĻĪ½Ī¬Ī²Ī±Ļ), bornĀ Joseph, was according to tradition an earlyĀ Christian, one of the prominentĀ Christian disciplesĀ in Jerusalem. According toĀ Acts 4:36, Barnabas was aĀ CypriotĀ Jew. Named anĀ apostleĀ inĀ Acts 14:14, he andĀ Paul the Apostle under took missionary journeys together and defendedĀ GentileĀ converts against theĀ Judaizers. They traveled together making more converts (c. 45ā47), and participated in theĀ Council of JerusalemĀ (c. 50). Barnabas and Paul successfully evangelized among theĀ “God-fearing”Ā Gentiles who attendedĀ synagoguesĀ in variousĀ HellenizedĀ cities ofĀ Anatolia.
